What do a woman's facial expressions look like when she is confronted with insults and prejudice in everyday life?
Visual artist Catalina Beres’ recent project focuses on understandings of misogyny within social exchanges. This body of work - which you can experience on Art Nordic June 24-26 - expands on her particular interests in feminism, the role of women in today’s society and mental health. Each piece pictures a woman’s face, showing their expression in reaction to insult and prejudice encountered in day-to-day situations. They show a range of emotions including shock, disgust, resignation, concern, discomfort and dismay.
Often working in series, Beres’ paintings celebrate womanhood, considering the complexity of historic and contemporary readings and realities of being a woman. Her work recognises feminine power in a world where men and women are conditioned to underestimate and reject femininity, seeing delicacy as weakness. She works towards unity and equality, counteracting ideas of ego that can be damaging within society.
Beres’ color palette includes bright, energetic combinations that form stylised representations. Some are conventional portraits of women and others combine facial features with pattern and expressive shapes to create more abstract compositions. The resulting works are colorful and graphic, putting across personality and attitude, recognising unfortunate shared experiences and creating a protest against them.
Catalina Beres grew up in Eastern Europe and studied at George Enescu University of Visual Arts and Design in Iasi, Romania, graduating in 2014. Before settling in Paris for a couple of years, she worked in different locations within Europe and ran a design company for several years. Since then, she has shown her paintings in New York, Miami and Paris.

Tatjana Wolfers @tatjanawolfers will be presenting at Art Nordic 2022 and we are looking forward to meeting her.
"My work is very experimental and abstract. I use a variety of materials such as acrylic, pigments, oil and others, so the canvas is mixed media. The colors I use, I choose intuitively. Therefore, my art is not considered action, but rather a process. In theory, my images can go on indefinitely.I see a canvas not as a border but as a partial cut.The organic forms are modeled from nature and provide space for individual interpretation. This design language gives my works of art their excitement and their specific handwriting. "- says Tatjana herself.

Kristin Berg Johnsen @kristinbergjohnsen is a Norwegian artist, working and living by the fjord near Oslo. She makes abstract/non figurative art in a mixture of analogue cut and paste collages and elements, handmade textures, marks and drawings, further developed digitally. The end result is Digital Graphic Artwork (D.G.A.), signed and numbered by the artist, in very limited editions, most of no more than 40 ex.
She is very much intrigued by the energy of colors, and the suggestions of relationships between elements and strokes that don’t represent anything but themselves.

Svitlana Lukhymiuk @iukhymiuk_art is an Ukrainian artist working in the technique of oil painting. She became interested in painting at the Children’s Art School, and later defended her master’s degree in sacred art at the Lviv National Academy of Arts.
In her paintings, Svitlana combines decorative style, which is characteristic of sacred art and an artist’s love of classical European painting.
Since Svitlana is an artist of sacred art by education, the basis of her creative work are icons, both traditional for Ukraine, imitating the Byzantine style, and modern icons.

During 2014-2021, the author’s works of art were repeatedly presented at group exhibitions and projects in Ukraine, Poland, Bulgaria and Belarus. Some of them are in private collections in Poland and the United States.

Meet Line Caroline - the artist behind @rubyfruit.studio 🍋🍊
She’s an oil painter and a material feminist. Her art is inspired by strong women, beautiful goddesses, nature, colors, and the merge of classic aesthetics and modern pop art. Every day she tries to capture the beauty of the feminine in all its forms in the hopes of inspiring others to notice the natural beauty of themselves and the world around us.
In 2019 she finished her Masters in Literature with a thesis on Material feminism and empowering feminist archetypes, such as the witch and the goddess, who represent a natural and strong femininity. These studies have inspired Line Carolines way of living, her belief system, and her art.
She makes art that celebrates the body, femininity, nature, and our beautiful emotions. Her pieces are the result of a combined love for classic aesthetics and a flourishing inspiration from pop art and bright colors. Line Caroline wants to inspire joy, sensitivity, and strength through her art.

🔴 “Rød Stue” (Red Room) 🔴 is a group of young artists (@jeppenymark, @katinka.olrik and @__laurabay__) who in the autumn of 2021 came together to explore art in collaboration with like-minded people. They met at Krabbesholm Folk High School, where after an exhibition for the board they quickly found out that together they could challenge and encourage each other in the often confusing world of art.
The group explores themes such as gender, humanity, inner feelings and the experiences they face together in the early twenties.The pictures in this post are from Rød Stues exhibition “Less Sex More Milk” in Four Boxes. The exhibition dealt with gender and sex using meat sculptures, performance art and modern paintings. Although they exhibit and work together, they have different strengths, which makes their work very broad in its form of expression. Due to the fact that they are three artists with different forms of work and approaches, they are embracing each other's differences. This has led to exhibitions with a wide variation in both artistic media and ulterior motives. Rød Stue is the result of these exhibitions coming together to form one expression.

The monotypes Pauline creates are unique and exquisite. She uses a mixed media technique and playful experimentation to create mirror images on paper. Every art piece is the result of processed imprints on glass boards. Sensory experiences in untouched nature inspire Pauline in her search for organic expressions. Colors, forms, and texture may reflect impressions from sceneries and seasonal variations in Norway. Maori culture is reflected in Creative Tiki's work, which captures the mystical essence and atmosphere of Tiki and Cannibal art. Ibrahim Yassin @ibrahimyassin.art is a visual artist and calligrapher from Southern Kurdistan now based in Copenhagen.Ink and liquid watercolor are used for most of his art, while shapes, dashes, and ink stains are added as part of a personal expression. Daria Ostrowska @dariaostrowskamalarstwo , Polish painter with Ukrainian roots, strives to find the element of divinity in women. This applies both to herself, the process of painting and searching, as well as what it reveals on canvas. She wants to portray the soul, the unreal spaces of the mind that order chaos in us, give us peace. There is simply something in us, in man that cannot be described with words.From the beginning of her work, her paintings have been inspired by icons and ancient art.
